I think Nick Johnson would be a better fit. The D'Backs led the NL in strikeouts last year, and I think they could use a high-OBP, low K player like Johnson more than LaRoche.

If the Diamondbacks don't need to get as much power from 1B, would that make Nick Johnson or Adam LaRoche that much more attractive as free agents to them

It would be nice if Jackson could show more power. But as he is, a consistent 810 OPS player is pretty useful, especially since the team is getting good power from many other positions (Reynolds, Upton, hopefully Allen). He adds a patient, disciplined hitter to the lineup.

It's nice to see Jackson off to a hot start in Winter Ball, but I'm still skeptical. He didn't get improve from 2007 to 2008 and he'll be 28 shortly after next season begins. He doesn't really have enough power to be an ideal first baseman. That said, maybe he'll be healthy and motivated enough that the DBacks can showcase him for a trade and get something useful for him next year.
